Spooky season is nearing.
For some, this means pumpkin-flavored everything, cozy sweaters and blankets to ward off the chill of the changing season, or simply nature transforming around us.
Others? It’s all about the Halloween vibes.
And this year, Freeform’s newest series arriving in October is giving all the chills and thrills of any spooky-time series.
First having been developed as Disney Channel’s first young adult series, new series “Coven Academy” has found a new home on the sister network. Slated for its world premiere on October 1st on Freeform, with a next-day Disney+ rollout, it’s time to charm with this coven of witches.
In its first teaser trailer, “Coven Academy” already makes it clear why Disney may have elected to move the series towards the older demographic of Freeform. It’s dark, intense and very reminiscent of other dark teen dramas.
The trailer shows us a quick overview of some of the action, teen angst and fantasy-powered threats. It feels like a fusion of the likes of “Wednesday” meets “Fate: The Winx Saga”—along with other hallmarks inside this subgenre.
This new series is set within the heart of the haunted city of New Orleans and chronicles three teenage witches as they navigate school life—and magical happenings. But this isn’t any normal high school where their magical aptitudes must remain secret. Rather, their magic is the only thing that isn’t hidden under the cloak of secrets. These three unlikely friends must face warlock peers inside the magical boarding school. A place where their power is currency, secrets are most dangerous and romance—let’s just say sparks flying isn’t as innocent as you may presume.
Standing inside the intersection of ancient supernatural wars and forbidden loves, these teens are going to face challenges and choices around what they are willing to do to protect themselves, their home and even one another. The cost of these decisions—that is unknown.
The series is led by Briar, an independent New Yorker who discovers she is a witch. Jake, a magnetic warlock with a dangerous edge. Sasha, a deeply empathic student who has the ability to read minds. Tegan, an irreverent time-bending witch. Ollie, a hungry and freshly minted vampire. Miss Graves, a formidable and glamorous head of the school.
With the days until October arrives dwindling, the wait until one of the most anticipated live-action series draws closer—along with the danger it holds. Created with a bingeable new format, fans can look forward to fast-paced chapters that will allow them to dive deeper into the magical journey as it progresses.
